6th 1977 The band travel to Mont de Marson in France to play a summer festival with The Clash & The Damned. Paul and Bruce get arrested for a drunken swim in a city centre fountain.

8th 1978 The Jam release a cover of an old Kinks classic 'David Watts' which reaches a disappointing number 25 in the charts


8th 1981 Paul Weller makes a TV programme on class awareness for BBC's Something Else series.


12th 1975 The Jam audition for TV's Opportunity Knocks at Surbiton Town Hall, and fail to get on.


15th 1980 12th single Start is released and becomes the band's second number one hit


17th 1979 The band's 9th single When You're Young is released and reaches number 17 in the UK charts


18th 1978 Another early TV appearance, this time on the Revolver TV show, to play David Watts and A Bomb in Wardour Street


22nd 1977 Booked into Basing Street Studios, London to start recording This Is The Modern World. The boys find the Bee Gee's also there, recording the classic Staying Alive.


25th 1978 Headlining the Reading Rock Festival, Reading, England.


28th 1979 Enter Townhouse Studios, London to start the recording of fourth album Setting Sons
